How to Cut Polycarbonate Sheets?
Polycarbonate Sheets can be cut easily, you can use hand scissors, circular saw, bench saw, or engraving equipment to cut.
If the thickness of polycarbonate sheets are less than 2mm, you can use a pair of hand scissors to cut, the hand scissor is for a small quantity. It is the right way to use a circular saw to cut 3mm, 4mm, or thicker. But circular saws are for straight cutting only. When you want to make a curved cut, you can use a vertical band saw, hand-held jigsaw, engraving equipment. The following is the cutting process for polycarbonate sheets.
1. Don' t remove the thin plastic films
Keep the protective plastic covers of the polycarbonate sheet from damage. Firstly, do not rush to remove the transparent plastic films on the surfaces before the PC sheets are installed in place. The thin plastic firms protect the polycarbonate sheets during the cutting process.
2. Making marks on the surface of polycarbonate sheets
Using a black marker and ruler to make lines on the polycarbonate sheets as the edges.
3. Choosing a suitable saw and cut polycarbonate sheets according to the line marks carefully
A fine-tooth saw blade is installed in a circular saw for straight cutting. For blades with a diameter of 10 inches or 14 inches, the blades should be about 70 teeth. The saw speed must be approximately 3,400 RPM. Lay plastic sheets during the cutting process to get good support from them. This may require the use of two 2x4 cutouts to support the polycarbonate sheet. Start the saw and cut the polycarbonate sheet into sheet material. Do not stop the saw until the cut is complete. Do not force the saw through the material during the cutting process, or the polycarbonate material may crack.
4. Cutting the curve
Using a hand-held jigsaw to cut the curve on polycarbonate panels if accuracy isn' t important.
First installs metal cutting blades into the saw with a minimum of 10 teeth per inch. Place the polycarbonate material on the cutting platform, and then follow step 3. Next, adjust the speed of the saw so that the blade moves at approximately 12,000 strokes per minute. Finally, start cutting; do not force the saw through the material.
5. Check the sizes
Using the ruler to measure the sizes of polycarbonate sheets according to drawings. If sizes are ok, that means you are successful. If sizes are not ok, go back to Step 3 and step 4.
Note: If you need to cut more than hundreds of polycarbonate sheets with the same size, or if you need to manufacture polycarbonate sheets with complex shapes, the engraving equipment will be needed.
